Colorbond® Steel or Zincalume® Steel – Which Roof Is the Best for Your New Home?

roof and gutter maintenanceSo, you’ve made the smart decision to install a durable and long-lasting metal roof on your property – but should you go with a Colorbond® or Zincalume® finish? Can the wide range of colours offered by Colorbond® match up to the cost-effectiveness of Zincalume®?

As roofing manufacturers using both of these quality options from BlueScope Steel, we have listed the advantages of each so you can determine which one fits your needs the best.

Colorbond® – 22 Colours to Suit Your Property

Since being introduced in Australia in 1966, Colorbond® steel has grown in popularity due to its light weight, durability, strength and wide range of colours to fit your vision. Colorbond® is proven to withstand the volatile elements of Australian weather, and requires little to no maintenance as the colour is bonded to the steel and does not require repainting.

The different profiles of Colorbond® roof sheeting allow you to further customise your home and provide a variety of classic or contemporary styles that will endure well. With 22 colours currently offered in the range, you can be sure you will find the perfect option to highlight the aesthetics of your home.

Colorbond® is also very efficient thermally, utilising Thermatech technology to prevent radiant heat during hot weather and cool more efficiently than tiled roofs in the evening.

Although Colorbond® roofing is dearer than Zincalume®, the prefinished colour and low maintenance, long term performance make it a great choice for the long run.

Zincalume® – Cost-Effective and Strong

Zincalume® is formed from a blend of aluminium, magnesium, silicon and zinc. Having been thoroughly tested with regard to its ability to withstand the elements, Zincalume® has shown to be exceptionally durable, and is also environmentally friendly being fully recyclable.

While older-style corrugated iron roofs were once susceptible to scratching during installation, new technology in Zincalume® has reduced this risk with advanced corrosion protection mechanisms built into the coating system.

The major selling point of Zincalume® is the competitive price. While not everyone will prefer the natural metal look of Zincalume®, if it fits with your vision for your property you will be very happy with the overall cost and finish of your Zincalume® roof.

The Best of Both Worlds

Can’t decide on Colorbond® or Zincalume®? We agree, it is a tough decision.

Whatever option you go for, it’s worth viewing your roof as a long-term investment and choosing a metal roof will provide excellent long-term protection from the elements for your home and family. While the initial outlay with Colorbond® will be higher, you can rest assured that the roof will still look great years down the track if you plan to sell your property while Zincalume® will retain its natural, somewhat rugged appearance.
